School Holidays are often so hard for our kiddos, and for lots of different reasons.

One of the reasons is, #schoolholidays are not really a “holiday” for our kiddos – as in “getting a break from it all” – at all.

#School holidays are really just part of a never-ending cycle. A cycle where our child is forever sandwiched:
– struggling so much in their school environment and desperate for a break
– being too stressed (often just by changes in routine) to really enjoy the break when it comes…
– knowing the break is going end very soon and the stress cycle will begin again..
– so being stressed that the break is coming to an end …
– then being thrown straight back into the #schooldistress and #trauma that they haven’t had time to recover from, as soon as they get back to school.

Added to that, well-meaning family or friends may be just that: well-meaning. But constantly reminding the child that they’ll soon be back at school does literally *nothing* to help anyone.

Yet our kiddos will be expected to just bounce straight back through the school gate on the first day back, all bright eyed, refreshed and “ready to learn”.

These kids are not bright eyed, or refreshed.

Many of them will not have slept well, or been able to eat well, or find any kind of respite, for days before the first day back.

They are hyper-vigilant, #anxious, scared.
Inhabited by a sense of dread.
Because they know more of what met them last term – the pressure to perform and just keep up, no matter what .. the competition .. the social exclusion .. the punishment or shaming .. the days upon days of their needs going unseen/unmet .. all that stuff that made them so unhappy and anxious all through the last term, is exactly what’s coming at them again for another 6-8 weeks 😔

Thank you for sharing x

I'm half way through your new book. I'd have loved an audio version due to never having spare time, especially of an evening. My youngest is starting to struggle with school and he has expressed over the Xmas holidays that school is too much and is torture (his words not mine). My eldest stopped attending Oct 23 & now has a pathetic EOTIS package. It never ends 😭
